The local take

Our Tuesday pod's home court. Mornings stay open; weekend afternoons get hot and crowded — get here by 8am if you want a guaranteed court.

What it's like to play here

Jerome Park's 4 outdoor courts sit in a residential pocket of Santa Ana, off Center Street. The surface is standard concrete — smooth enough for a clean dink, grippy enough that you don't slide on side-shuffles. Lines are repainted often, which is more than you can say for half the OC city courts.

The nets are permanent and well-tensioned. None of the slack-net drama you get at parks where the city hasn't checked them in two years.

Where it stands out: lighting until 10pm. Most OC public courts cut off at 9 or just don't have lights at all. Jerome's lights are bright enough that night doubles is actually playable — no shadow-ball drama on the third shot. This is the reason our pod made it our Tuesday home.

Where it falls short: the courts get hot in the afternoon. The surface holds heat; July 3pm is unplayable on the south-facing two. Morning play is the move.

When to go (and when not to)

  • Best: weekday mornings 7–10am, weeknight after 6pm under lights.
  • Avoid: weekend 11am–4pm (full and hot), any time it's just rained — concrete stays slick for an hour.

How to get there

Take 405 to Bristol or 5 to Edinger. Park on Center Street (free) or in the small lot off Jerome. Lot fills by 9am weekends; street parking is plentiful but you might walk a block.

If you're driving down from north OC, give it 25 minutes off the 5. From south OC, 30+.
